The goal of Medical Product Stability Day is to recognize the process, as well as the scientists who work with a small army of stakeholders to conduct the experiments to determine the stability of medical products, which results in the approved shelf life, prescribed storage conditions and safety of the patient.

February 19th, the date chosen for this recognition, coincides with the birthday of Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), a Swedish scientist who perfected the equation in which shelf life could be calculated and is still in worldwide use today for many categories of medical products.

Take some time this month to celebrate and acknowledge the work of Stabilitarians in your organization and congratulate them on their special day. Here at StabilityHub, we are holding a Medical Product Stability Day Zoom Meeting (1 pm Eastern Time on Thursday, Feb 16). The 1 hour event is open to all and in between highlighting some Stability-related facts, the staff will be glad to answer stability questions from the participants who Zoom in.

Here are a few ideas to commemorate the day:

  • Book a large conference room soon for a convenient day of your choice (Feb 19 is a Sunday this year and is followed by Presidents Day in the US, so Thursday Feb 16 or Friday, Feb 17 may be good options).
  • Invite your department, division or company in for refreshments (“Stability Day” cake?) Get an e-announcement and invitation out as soon as you have a date and place. See the suggested press release below. Add the specifics of your celebration event. Issue a follow-up reminder on the day of.
  • Set up an eye-catching display about the aspects of your Stability Function. Include staff photos and some interesting facts- How many studies, samples, pull points, tests, etc. were processed in 2022. Show how the Stability Function is linked to a host of stakeholders. Post suggestions that your visitors may use to enhance their Stability connection (liaisons, coordinated procedures, communications, etc.) Publish your goals for advancing the program is 2023.
  • Invite key stakeholders to schedule a joint Stability-Stakeholder Group lunch meeting to brainstorm how they might collaborate to improve their interaction with the Stability Function and how to best collaborate on regulatory inspections involving Stability.
  • Take photos (where allowed) of your celebration and write up a brief description of what your group did. The StabilityHub Newsletter will highlight some of these events in a future Newsletter.

Your potential company press release:

Each pharmaceutical, biological, medical device, vaccine, and cell therapy company employs or contracts scientists who subject the product to a range of temperature, humidity, and light over a period of time, test the product periodically for degradation, and employ statistics to the trend results in order to project its shelf life. These experiments also inform how medical personnel, and the patient can safely store the product.

While every user sees the expiration date and recommended storage conditions on the package, few realize how much knowledge and work went into the determination of this information and that a specialized group of scientists known as Stabilitarians play a key part in producing it.
